Society Registration

A Society is a form of NGO which functions for the benefit of the general public does the charitable activities and do not carry any business or commercial activities.

Which Act Governs the Registration of Societies in India?

The Societies Registration Act, 1860 governs the registration of Societies in India.

Any Person competent to enter into a contract is eligbile to register a Society in India.

What are the minimum number members required to register a Society?

To register a state level society their must be 7 members and for national level society registration 8 members of different states are required. It is to be noted here that unlike trust the member of the society should not be blood relatives.

The registration procedure of Society is more complicated as complared to the trust, the Registrar of Societies is responsible for the processing of the registration of the society in India and unlike trust the registration of society doesn’t require the physical appearance of the members in order to get the society registered.

Registration of society requires more time as compared to the registration of trust.The procedure for society registration takes a minimum of one month and which can be extended by further uncountable days or months in special circumstances.

The primary condition which applies to the trust applies to the societies as well i.e there shall not be any personal interest of the members in any income or property or resource of the society.
